Takes you places!

From The Editor | Spring 2026

Between the last edition and this one, ABW turned 80. The event was celebrated with a grand evening that was testament to the incredible talents of those who planned and executed it. Well done to everyone who contributed!

By contrast, this edition is a sombre affair. We say farewell to one of our dearly beloved life members, John Bartlett. He stayed active in the club right up to his final months, with his characteristic enthusiasm and good humour. Many of us attended his funeral and Jeannie has written a lovely tribute to him in this magazine.

To compliment his obituary, I have published an archive article he wrote on an interesting Gammons trip he also led. It gives a good impression of his fine character, meticulous planning, and passion for walking.

Fittingly, I’ve also managed to write up the return of ABW to the Gammons in 2026. John would be proud to see us back exploring what used to be one of our favourite haunts. It’s sure to be the first of many trips to the region.

Next is an article on navigating by map and compass. David Evans is famous for his navigation skills in the days before electronic aids, and he has blessed us with his thoughts.

Unusually, this edition includes a second article written by myself. It is on a subject very dear to my heart which might seem a little dry and abstract. However those with the interest will find the information they need to get the most out of their gas stove.

If you think you couldn’t also write something for the members, you’re just plain wrong. Whatever your special subject or interest, I can guarantee there are people who need to hear it. Just get in touch to discuss how. Don’t be put off by style nazis either. It’s your voice we need, not theirs!
